Butter Boards Are the New Charcuterie Boards—Here’s How to Make One Sustainably
butter-board-01

Summer soirées may be dying down, but the holiday season (and its many, many gatherings) is fast approaching. And like a beacon, a new entertaining trend has emerged just in time: the butter board. The viral idea is appealing in its simplicity, using the concept of a charcuterie board as a vehicle for elevated butter spreads.

As exemplified by Justine Doiran of Justine Snacks—who really did a thing here, though the idea originally comes from chef and author Josh McFadden—creating your own butter board is as easy as it seems. Cover a butcher board in the butter of your choice, sprinkle on some toppings, and pull a slice of baguette through the layer for a sweet or savory snack, depending on your inclinations. Easy, indulgent, pretty, and perfect for a party.

Though always tasty, your butter board can be as healthy as you want it to be—for you and for the planet. Those who lean vegan can switch out traditional butter for a favored non-dairy butter, whether whipped up at home or purchased for the occasion.

If you love real butter but want to minimize your footprint, simply head to your local farmers’ market and track down a locally-sourced option. If you’re shopping at your local grocery store, opt for butter options that have labels like “Certified Organic.” And don’t even get us started on nut butters—the possibilities here are as endless as they are delicious.

Below, the recipe for Doiran’s viral butter board that she shared on TikTok. If you need us, we’ll be in the kitchen… experimenting.
