How Long Does Hummus Last, Really? An RD Weighs in

Hummus is among our favorite snacks—it’s plant-based, delicious, protein-packed, and easy to make. But whether you’ve perfected the recipe or prefer a storebought iteration, you’ve likely found yourself asking: How long does hummus last? Like, actually?

If a survey of your fridge in search of the adaptable dip has found you confused by best-before dates and shelf-life, we’re here to help. Here’s everything you need to know about the lifespan of the popular snack—including how best to store it.

How Long Does Hummus Last?

According to Amy Gorin, RD, a plant-based registered dietitian and founder of Plant Based with Amy, how long your hummus lasts will depend heavily on how it’s stored.

“Store hummus in an airtight, sealed container in the refrigerator,” she says. “When hummus is exposed to the elements and unrefrigerated, bacteria and microbes can speed along the spoiling process.”

Store-bought hummus typically lasts 6 to 7 days in the refrigerator once opened. Homemade hummus stored in an airtight container typically lasts 3 to 4 days in the fridge.

Gorin says hummus will retain its freshness so long as it’s not kept out of the refrigerator for too long a period—no more than two hours, max. After you’re done dipping, seal it up and put it away.

Can You Freeze Hummus?

Looking to lengthen the life of your hummus? Store it for up to four months in the freezer. “Many people don’t realize that you can freeze hummus,” says Gorin. For those interested in this mode of storage, Gorin has some tips:

1. Place the hummus in an air-tight, freezer-safe container.

2. Leave a little room at the top of the container to allow the hummus to expand once frozen, with no more than 12 ounces of hummus per container.

3. Add a thin layer of olive oil to the top of the hummus prior to freezing.

Freezing your hummus can change the flavor, texture, and consistency once it’s thawed, so be sure to store and freeze it properly for the best-tasting results.

How Do You Know If Hummus Has Gone Bad?

Though your store-bought hummus may have a used-by date, this doesn’t necessarily indicate when the product has gone off.

“If your store-bought hummus container has been open for longer than a week, it’s likely not safe to eat,” Amy says. “Telltale signs can include an off odor, discolorations, dark spots, or mold.” Always check your hummus before eating it to make sure it’s still fresh—and when in doubt, it’s best to toss it out.

Fortunately, if you have extra hummus that needs to be consumed stat, there are a few simple ways you can put it to use. Upcycle your hummus by using it to create a salad dressing, spread liberally over toast or a tortilla, or get dipping!

Worst case? Dispose of your spoiled hummus in your at-home compost bin to avoid any emissions born of food waste.
