New year, same stars. Another collective turn around the sun brings many reasons to look ahead—and look up. Lucky for us, 2023 begins with some shimmer and light worthy of a new beginning.
The skies welcome January with the peak of an always-active meteor shower, along with the first full and new moons of the year, the latter allowing for some optimal stargazing.
Stopping to track the night sky’s storied show is an accessible activity that offers an immediate reminder of our planet’s place in the grander scheme, as well as our own. As you set your annual resolutions, take a cue from the stars and planets and shine as brightly as you wish.
3 January Celestial Events to Watch in 2023
January 3-4: Quadrantids Meteor Shower
Consider this a natural fireworks display. 2023 begins with a winter meteor shower, which picked up steam in late December and peaks between the 3rd and 4th. Find a viewing spot well away from the city’s ambient light and enjoy!
January 6: Full Wolf Moon
The first full moon of the year lights up long nights on the 6th. A micromoon, this orb may appear smaller than usual, but as January’s full moon is also known as the Wolf Moon, you’re still encouraged to get out there and howl.
January 21: New Moon
The 21st brings a new moon and ultra-dark skies ideal for setting intentions—and seeing stars.
