Plant-based eaters rejoice! After eight long years, Chipotle has officially added a new meatless protein to its menu: a completely vegan and plant-based chorizo.
The company began testing its chorizo in two cities last August: Denver and Indianapolis. It chose to bypass other meat alternative giants in favor of creating its own. (That’s right, no Beyond Meat or Impossible Meat… yet!) That trial has been so successful that Chipotle has now launched the plant-based Chorizo nationwide.
“We’re thrilled to introduce guests to our new, flavor-packed Plant-Based Chorizo during a season when healthier options are top of mind,” said Chris Brandt, Chipotle’s chief marketing officer, in a statement. “Plant-Based Chorizo is our best chorizo ever and proves that you don’t have to sacrifice flavor to enjoy a vegan or vegetarian protein.”
Here’s everything we know about Chipotle’s plant-based chorizo so far, including what it’s made of and where you can find it. Not into chorizo? Don’t worry—we have a recommendation for another vegan protein option at Chipotle as well.
What Is Chipotle’s Plant-Based Chorizo Made Of?
Chipotle’s plant-based chorizo is a natural protein source derived from freshly-grown peas. It’s loaded with flavor, as it’s seasoned with ancho and chipotle pepper, tomato, garlic, smoked paprika, and extra virgin olive oil.
With its pea base, the chorizo is loaded with protein, coming in at 16 grams of protein per 4 oz. serving. It’s also certified vegan and made without artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, grains, gluten, or soy, making it an option many people can enjoy.
When Can You Get Your Hands on It?
Chipotle’s plant-based chorizo is officially available at locations nationwide. In fact, it’s the prime ingredients in the chain’s healthy new lifestyle bowls: the Whole30 Salad Bowl, Vegetarian Bowl, and Vegan Bowl.
Here’s what’s especially cool: The chain is running a promotion between January 3 and January 31 where you can order one of these Lifestyle Bowls through its website or mobile app for free delivery. Getting a delicious plant-based meal in your hands has never been easier.
Other Vegan Options at Chipotle
Are you craving a Chipotle bowl with a different delicious plant-based alternative? Aside from plant-based chorizo, you can also order another vegan alternative: sofritas, Chipotle’s spicy tofu creation. Pair it with some rice, beans, veggies, and your toppings of choice, and you’ll have a mouth-watering dish that’s sure to satisfy.
Seeing more and more companies continue to experiment with planet-friendly options—including Taco Bell!—makes our taste buds (and hearts) happy. With this many choices at our fingertips, only one question remains: What do we try first?
