"Our Scouts tried EQUO's biodegradable coconut and sugarcane straws—an innovative zero-waste alternative to plastic straws. Here's what they thought."

EQUO Uses Natural Ingredients for the Perfect Alternative to Single-Use Plastic Straws

In 2019, more than 500 million plastic straws were used each day in the United States. (Yikes, we know.) Plastic straws are one of the most commonly used—and easily replaceable—plastics. They’re also often ingested by aquatic wildlife because they’re not biodegradable.

That’s why we go to EQUO for eco-friendly straws, as they’re made from innovative and biodegradable ingredients like sugarcane, coconut, grass, rice, and straw. Taking its name from a mix of the words “eco-friendly” and “status-quo,” trailblazer and female founder Marina Tran-Vu came up with this idea in hopes of making the world a better place. EQUO’s mission statement mimics Brightly’s inclusive ethos: “Every little action helps.”

These straws rival the plastic alternative in functionality. Yep, the EQUO team made sure they don’t get soggy like some recyclable straws you may have encountered. They also manufactured them without utilizing plastic or chemicals. Whether you’re sipping on ice-cold lemonade or warm lemon water, these sustainable straws can handle it.

While metal straws are awesome plastic straw alternatives as well, these biodegradable straws are super convenient for when you’re on the go or too rushed to run the dishwasher. A convenient product that saves wildlife? Sign us up!

Here’s What Our Scouts Thought of These Biodegradable Straws

   Shayna Demick

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"I have reusable hard plastic straws and reusable metal straws, and the biggest thing that’s different with the sugarcane straws is they feel just like regular plastic straws. You can bite down on them, squeeze them, etc. They feel more natural to drink out of than regular reusable straws."

   Mary Olmsted

   Product I Tried:

    Rice Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★

"You could really only get a couple of hours out of one straw. After looking at their products more, I think I would like to give the sugar or grass ones a try, as they’re supposed to last longer. If I was having a gathering that needed lots of straws, I would try some of their other straws that seem to last longer because I think they’re a good conversation starter about what’s out there to try."

   Beth Early

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"I liked that they didn’t affect the taste, they kept their shape in liquid for a long time, and I could compost them when I was done! I also like that EQUO was founded by a woman. It really makes you wonder why we ever used plastic ones in the first place."

   Rubilyn Loanzon

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"I have a couple stainless steel straws for work purposes, but we have a few plastic straws from the times we’ve brought home take-out. It’s nice to have EQUO straws because it’s a great step to take when trying to eliminate single-use plastics in the kitchen. I never would have thought that sugarcane fibers could be used to make straws."

   Kimberlee Cardin

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"I knew about these beforehand, but never tried them as I have other reusable straws. But these are perfect for on-the-go! They don’t break too easily, and they don’t get mushy like some others."

   Ciara Fitts

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"They have expanded my knowledge of reusable straws. I love how they’re compostable after each use and kept their shape no matter what type of liquid they were in."

   Angela Lee

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"I love that these straws aren’t flimsy or weak and that they don’t get soggy, even after sitting in the liquid for a while. Way better than paper straws! I also like that the straws have some flexibility to them, as I have a (bad) habit of chewing my straws. These haven’t cracked from my chewing yet!"

   Rae Landrum

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

   Star Rating: ★★★★★

"EQUO products would be a great addition for large groups and dinner parties because buying a large number of reusable straws can be very expensive. EQUO will be a great way for me to provide eco-friendly straws for my guests without breaking the bank."

   Sara Collins

   Product I Tried:

    Sugarcane Straws

"They’re better than the paper straws I’ve been using and more affordable. They’re very sturdy and don't get soggy or fall apart."
